12th May 2007: Fighting Fit Juniors at the Leon Paul Tournament, Wrexham
Fighting Fit took 10 fencers to the Leon Paul Junior series foil tournament in Wrexham. The day started with our under 13 boys, Alex Beardmore, Jasper Gold, and Jamie Christofis. They all fenced well in the group matches, so they had a good seeding going into the direct elimination stage in the afternoon. All the boys fought very well with Jasper and Jamie both wining their last 32 match comfortably and progressed to the last 16, Alex received a bye into the last 16. Alex beat his opponent convincingly to move into the last 8. The other 2 boys fought well but were knocked out at this stage, Jasper was placed 11th and Jamie was 14th. Alex came up against one of Britain's best fencers, and although he gave a good account of himself, was eliminated, and finished in a very creditable 7th place.

Next to start were the under 11 boys and girls. Aaron Dorset Young, and Katie Beardmore. Aaron fenced well above himself in his first tournament, and gave a good account of himself in all his matches. After a close fought match he was knocked out at the last 16 stage, finishing in 14th place. Katie fought with great maturity, wining the majority of her morning pool matches, going through to the semi-final with ease. She won, in a nail biting encounter, 10 hits to 9. In the final, she faced a girl that she had lost to narrowly earlier in the day. Unfortunately, nerves got the better of her and she finished with a well deserved silver medal.
In the under 13 girls, Leah King fenced beautifully, and won all her matches convincingly in the morning, to be seeded 3rd. Leah breezed through the next few rounds to reach the semi-final. After an enthralling match it was all square at 6 hits each when time ran out, she was very unlucky to lose in extra time. She finished 3rd and came home with a well deserved bronze medal. In the under 15 girls, Natasha Gillmour had a very hard challenge in her first tournament, she was up against fencers with 5 or more years experience, whilst she has only been fencing since last September. She fenced with great maturity, and got several great hits. Natasha was eliminated at the last 16 stage and finished in a commendable 10th place.
Our under 9 fencers, Flynn Tovey-Ashforth, Dominic De Almeda and Evie Gold were the last to get under way, all 3 of them fenced exceptionally well, wining most of there matches in the morning pools, all of them reached the semi-finals in style. Dominic had a tough semi-final match, he fought bravely, but unfortunately lost narrowly to finish 3rd with a bronze medal. Flynn, also fenced very well, but also lost in his semi-final, also coming home with a bronze. In the girls semi-final, Evie came up against a very talented opponent, and despite her best efforts she was defeated, finishing in 3rd wining a bronze as well.
Special thanks to all the parents and staff at Fighting Fit, for all of their support and hard work. The majority of the children only started fencing last year and for 50% of them to come home with a medal is a wonderful achievement.
